Burg Wiesentfels, Medieval castle in Hollfeld, Germany.
Burg Wiesentfels is a medieval castle in Hollfeld, Bavaria, built on a steep rock above the Wiesent valley. The remains include sections of defensive walls and building foundations that reflect several construction phases over the centuries.
The castle was built in the high Middle Ages, most likely around the 12th or 13th century, to control the surrounding region. It changed hands several times over the following centuries and gradually fell into ruin after losing its military purpose.
The name Wiesentfels refers to the Wiesent river valley that runs below the rocky hill on which the castle stands. Visitors can still walk around the outer walls and get a clear sense of how the site was laid out.
The castle ruin is easy to reach on foot from Hollfeld town center, though the path up the rocky hill requires some effort. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the trail can be uneven and slippery in wet conditions.
The castle sits in the Franconian Switzerland region, where limestone rocks push up directly beneath the walls and were used as part of the structure itself. This means the boundary between the natural rock and the built wall is often impossible to tell apart at close range.
