Zwernitz Castle, Medieval castle in Wonsees, Germany
Zwernitz Castle is a Romanesque fortress in Wonsees featuring a substantial keep and tithe barn, both built from dressed stone blocks. The buildings sit on a natural elevation that gives the complex a commanding position in the landscape.
The fortress was first documented in 1156 and served initially as the hereditary seat of the Upper Franconian Walpodes. In 1338, it passed to the Hohenzollern family, who became major rulers in the region for centuries to come.
The permanent exhibition shows hunting traditions of the margraves of Ansbach and Bayreuth through objects from the 16th to 18th centuries. Visitors can see how important hunting was to the nobility of this region and the craftsmanship that went into the displayed pieces.
The castle sits between Bayreuth and Bamberg near Highway 70, making it readily accessible by car. Visitors here have direct access to guided tours and the adjacent Sanspareil Rock Garden next door.
The fortress was part of a medieval communication system, using its strategic hilltop location to transmit signals across Franconian Switzerland. This made it an important hub for exchanging information over long distances in the region.
