Burg in Hayn, Medieval castle ruins in Obertshausen, Germany
Burg im Hayn is a castle ruin in Obertshausen with wall remnants and stone fragments scattered across the site. The original footprint measured roughly 28 by 31 meters, and the surviving walls reach about 2.20 meters in thickness.
The fortress came under the control of Mainz Archbishop Adalbert in 1124. By 1173, jurisdiction rights passed to the Lords of Eppstein, who then commanded the region.
The site once served as a center of local authority that shaped life in the region. Today visitors can read from the foundation stones how the fortification once functioned and what role it held for the people of Obertshausen.
The site is difficult to access and consists mainly of foundation remains and scattered stones. Wear sturdy shoes and expect uneven ground when exploring the ruins.
Archaeological digs in the 1960s and 1970s uncovered a central tower structure and a water-filled moat. These discoveries revealed how carefully the original defensive layout was designed.
