Burg Prunn, Medieval castle in Altmühl Valley, Germany
The castle stands on a vertical limestone cliff rising 70 meters above the Altmühl River, featuring a central 31-meter-tall defensive tower and Gothic residential buildings.
First documented in 1037, the castle changed ownership from the Lords of Prunn to Duke Ludwig of Bavaria in 1288, who later granted it to the Fraunberg family.
The castle held the Prunner Codex, an important manuscript of the Nibelungenlied epic poem, which was discovered in 1566 and moved to Munich's ducal library.
The castle opens daily from April through October between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with regular guided tours available every hour and admission fees of 6 euros.
Gothic frescoes remain visible in the former guardroom, displaying medieval castles and reflecting the artistic preferences of the Fraunberg knights during their residency.
