Burg Prunn

Burg Prunn is a castle standing on a vertical limestone cliff above the Altmühl River in the Altmühl Valley. The central defensive tower rises 31 meters high, and Gothic residential buildings with decorated windows complete the fortress.

First documented in 1037, the castle changed hands over the centuries, eventually coming under the control of the Fraunberg family who left their mark on its architecture and interior design.

The castle once held the Prunner Codex, a precious manuscript of the Nibelungenlied epic, showing that this place was more than just a fortress but also a center of learning and literature in medieval times.

The castle is accessible during daytime hours with clear paths to explore its different sections. Wear sturdy shoes for the walk, as the approach involves stairs and uneven ground leading up to the fortress.

Gothic frescoes remain visible in the former guardroom, depicting medieval castles and revealing the artistic tastes of the knights who lived here. These wall paintings offer a window into the daily life and creative interests of your medieval residents.
