Burg Pungelscheid

The remaining structures of Burg Pungelscheid include agricultural buildings, a timber-framed granary, and brick-filled frameworks on elevated terrain at 340 meters above sea level.

Built around 1300 by Rötger von Neuhoff, the castle served as a residence for the von Neuhoff family until a lightning strike in 1797 caused its destruction.

The site represents medieval German fortification architecture with its round tower remnants and cellar vaults, reflecting regional construction techniques of the period.

Located near the southern edges of the Lenne Mountains, the castle grounds now contain a private farmhouse with the road Alt Pungelscheid passing through the former castle area.

The castle grounds maintain an original medieval well alongside the farmhouse, while an old blacksmith workshop stands as a protected monument on the property.
