Burg Pungelscheid

Burg Pungelscheid, Medieval castle ruins in Werdohl, Germany

Description

Burg Pungelscheid is a castle ruin in Werdohl set on elevated ground at about 340 meters in height. Today the grounds contain remnants of farm buildings, a timber-framed granary, and vaulted cellars, along with a modern farmhouse and the road Alt Pungelscheid that passes through the property.

History

The fortress was built around 1300 by Rötger von Neuhoff and served as a residence for the von Neuhoff family for centuries. A lightning strike in 1797 destroyed the main structures and led to the site's decline.

Culture

The site shows traces of medieval defensive architecture through its remaining walls and vaulted cellars, reflecting how people in this region built fortifications. Visitors can observe these old construction methods directly in the standing structures.

Practical

The site is located in the southern foothills of the Lenne Mountains and can be reached from the road Alt Pungelscheid. Keep in mind that the grounds function as a private farm today, so visitors should approach respectfully.

Did you know?

The farm still maintains an original medieval well on the property that once supplied water to the fortress. An old blacksmith workshop also stands on the site and is protected as a historical monument, showing how craftsmen worked centuries ago.
