The center opened in September 1985 on the site of two former breweries that had operated there for years. Before construction, the land was an industrial area in the middle of the city.

The underground parking has electronic signs showing available spots on each level, and reserved areas are set aside for visitors with disabilities. Access from the garage to the shopping floors is direct and clearly marked.
The underground parking was built to double as a civil defense shelter in case of emergency. This hidden function makes it one of the largest facilities of this type in Germany.
