Nordfriedhof, Cemetery in Schwabing-Freimann, Germany
The Nordfriedhof features an octagonal domed chapel with multiple turrets and yellow walls, surrounded by 34,000 burial plots across symmetrical fields.
Established in 1884 by the former community of Schwabing, the cemetery contains a mass grave for 2,099 victims of World War II air raids.
Notable figures interred here include Johannes Heesters, Eduard Zimmermann, and Peter Paul Althaus, reflecting Munich's social and artistic heritage.
The cemetery remains open to visitors and features specially designed urn walls, fountains, and multiple pathways throughout its expansive grounds.
Two sphinx statues, combining features of roosters and lions, guarded the entrance until their mysterious disappearance in 1958.
