Wohnheim Biederstein, Student residence and architectural monument in Schwabing, Germany.
Wohnheim Biederstein is a residential complex in Schwabing comprising five interconnected buildings with distinctive gabled roofs and modern atrium houses. The compound extends along Biedersteiner Straße and contains more than 160 housing units of varying sizes for student residents.
The complex was built between 1952 and 1956 by architects Otto and Harald Roth on the site of the former Biederstein Castle. This construction was part of Munich's rebuilding effort in the years following World War II.
The residence brings together students from around the world, who organize cultural events throughout the year in shared spaces. These gatherings help create bonds between residents and give the complex a sense of community beyond just housing.
The site is located near the Englischer Garten and is easily accessible by public transportation. Visitors can view the architecture from outside, with green spaces between the buildings appearing open and accessible to walk through.
A renovation completed in 2009 and 2010 earned the complex an award for its facade design. This modernization preserved the character of postwar architecture while meeting contemporary standards for comfort and efficiency.
