Eisenbahnbrücke Meißen, Railway bridge across Elbe River in Meissen, Germany
The Eisenbahnbrücke Meissen spans the Elbe River using a steel truss design and connects the districts of Cölln and Triebischvorstadt. The structure measures 256 meters in length and rests on sturdy pillars.
The bridge opened in December 1868 as a single-track railway structure on the Borsdorf-Coswig line, connecting Leipzig and Dresden. A century later it was completely rebuilt in 1926 with updated designs.
The structure reflects a long tradition of engineering skill and was redesigned with plans from architect Heinrich Tessenow while keeping its original pillars. Visitors can still see how the past and present versions exist side by side in this single work.
The bridge includes a pedestrian walkway alongside the railway tracks, allowing visitors to cross on foot. Following extensive restoration work between 2012 and 2013, the structure received modern corrosion protection.
The bridge is notable because it serves both railway and pedestrian traffic simultaneously on the same crossing. This dual-purpose design is relatively uncommon among major river crossings in the region.
