Unterburg trolleybus turntable, Transportation infrastructure in Solingen, Germany
The Unterburg trolleybus turntable rotates vehicles through a complete 360-degree turn within 45 seconds using a mechanical platform with a 12-meter diameter.
The turntable replaced former tram services in 1959 and operated until 2009, serving trolleybus line 683 in the narrow valley of the Wupper River.
This transportation structure represents engineering solutions from the mid-20th century, when German cities developed alternatives to traditional bus and tram networks.
Drivers control the turntable from a separate control house, requiring the lowering of trolley poles before rotation and raising them afterward for wire connection.
The Unterburg facility stands as one of only four remaining trolleybus turntables worldwide, with similar structures previously existing in Great Britain and Mexico.
