Wiesenkotten, Historic mill structure near Wupper River in Solingen, Germany
Wiesenkotten is a former mill situated along the Wupper River between the districts of Munsgten and Burg, featuring stone structures with views across the river valley. The site includes the main building and surrounding grounds that stretch toward the forested slopes on both banks.
The structure was built in the first half of the 18th century and initially operated as a double mill for grinding knife blades. By the mid-1800s, production shifted to sawing, marking a gradual transition away from its original industrial purpose.
The building served as a restaurant starting in the 1880s and became a gathering spot for travelers crossing the river and hikers exploring the valley. Visitors today still experience it as a place where the local community meets and connects with nature.
The location is accessible through hiking paths along the Wupper River and near the Burger Landstrasse road, with a direct footpath leading to the grounds. Walking is the most practical approach, and the site provides ample space to rest and explore the surroundings at your own pace.
A prehistoric fortified ring wall sits on the western slope above the river, dating from ancient times long before the mill was built. This archaeological feature suggests the location held strategic importance for communities centuries before industrial use began.
