Kirche Maria Frieden, Parish church in Mariendorf, Germany
Maria Frieden Church is a modern parish church in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district, completed in 1969 with a clean, contemporary design. The interior features marble altars, bronze statues, and a 34-register organ that was added a decade later.
The parish community formed in 1919 and initially held services in a temporary structure that had previously served as a military hospital. The current building from the 1960s represents the reconstruction of religious life in postwar Berlin.
The church houses artwork that reflects post-war Berlin, including stained glass by Paul Ohnsorge and a striking Madonna painting by Otto Dix set against barbed wire. These pieces give the space a thoughtful character that goes beyond typical religious decoration.
The building with its 335 seats is easily reached by public transport and remains open for visitors on most days. Arriving during times when services are not taking place allows you to explore the interior at a comfortable pace.
Three bronze bells cast in 1968 hang in the bell tower and continue to shape the neighborhood's soundscape. These bells were created just before the organ arrived, forming a complete audio landscape for the congregation.
