Hochhaus an der Weberwiese, Residential high-rise building in Friedrichshain, Germany.
Hochhaus an der Weberwiese is a nine-story residential building in Stalinist architecture, distinguished by ceramic tiles and brickwork on its symmetrical facade. The 35-meter structure contains 33 apartments and was equipped with central heating, built-in kitchens, and an elevator serving all floors.
The building was completed in 1952 during East Germany's post-war reconstruction phase and served as a model for socialist residential architecture of the era. Architect Hermann Henselmann designed it as a modern home meant to set new standards for comfort and design.
The structure displays decorative friezes, cornices, and pillars reflecting the architectural ideals of its era. Today visitors can observe these ornamental details on the symmetrical facade and understand how the concept of representative building was understood at that time.
The building is viewable from the street and its architectural features can be observed from ground level. Visitors can best appreciate the ceramic tiles, brick facade, and decorative elements in early morning or late afternoon light, which brings out the details more clearly.
A quote by Bertolt Brecht appears above the main entrance reading: 'Peace in our country, peace in our city, may it house well those who built it.' These words reveal the hopes and faith placed in socialist architecture during this period.
