Florentine-Eiche, Ancient oak tree in Straupitz, Germany
The Florentine Oak is a dead oak tree in the Byttnahain forest. The lifeless wood has a trunk circumference of about 8.5 meters and stands at a height of about 16 meters above the forest floor.
The tree lived until around 1946 or 1947, when it died and became a lifeless monument. Its naming after a local noblewoman from that era connects it to the family history of the region.
The tree is named after a 19th-century noblewoman and marks the memory of old grazing forests where farmers once drove their pigs. The dead wood still shows how important oaks were for rural life in this region.
The dead tree sits directly along a hiking trail south of the Byttna and is visible from the L51 regional road between Straupitz and Byhleguhre. Wear comfortable shoes, as the surrounding area is forested and the paths are not always well-maintained.
In 2000, a new oak tree was planted next to the dead wood to continue its story. The young tree bears the name Florentinchen and grows where the original monument still stands.
