North Frisia, Geographic region in northern Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

North Frisia is a coastal area in Schleswig-Holstein stretching from the mainland to the offshore islands of Sylt, Föhr, and Amrum. The landscape shifts between flat marshlands, salt meadows, and tidal flats that appear at low tide and disappear under water when the sea rises.

Two waves of settlers arrived during the 8th century, first claiming the islands and then moving to the mainland after severe storms pushed them inland. Salt harvesting from peat deposits and herring fishing near Heligoland shaped the economy from the 14th century onward.

The area preserves a local language spoken on the islands and mainland, with residents still using traditional phrases in everyday conversations and place names. Visitors can spot bilingual signs in villages and hear older generations teaching these dialects to younger family members.

Visitors can explore the area on foot, by bicycle, or by ferry, with tides determining access to certain zones. Wind farms shape the appearance of open spaces and remain visible from many viewpoints.

The coast changes its appearance twice daily as tides shift, making large areas walkable at low tide before they vanish beneath the water again. Some visitors join guided walks across these tidal flats to witness the transformation firsthand.
