Olfen Roman Camp

Olfen Roman Camp is an ancient military installation positioned along the River Lippe, displaying clear traces of Roman construction techniques and layout. The remains include fortification walls, ditches, and building foundations that reveal the typical structure of a Roman military fort.

The installation was established in the early 1st century BC as a Roman military base under General Drusus operating against Germanic tribes. It was abandoned after several decades when Roman strategy in the region shifted.

This site held strategic importance as a Roman military hub in the region's defense network. Visitors can observe how the settlement was positioned within the landscape and understand the daily operations that took place within its walls.

The remains are accessible and can be observed from designated viewing areas, with clearly marked pathways guiding visitors through the site. Conditions are best during drier months when the soil is stable, as wet weather can make walking difficult.

Bronze items and coins discovered here come from a very short operational period, helping archaeologists pinpoint exactly when the camp functioned. These artifacts offer rare glimpses into the material culture and economic life of a Roman military unit.
