Könneritzbrücke, Steel truss bridge in Schleußig, Leipzig, Germany.
The Könneritzbrücke is a steel truss bridge crossing the Weiße Elster river in Leipzig and connecting the districts of Schleußig and Plagwitz. Its structure features riveted girder construction and spans 31 meters across the water.
The structure replaced an older wooden bridge in 1899 and was part of the modern infrastructure development during industrialization of the Plagwitz district. This modernization of river crossings allowed faster connections between the expanding neighborhoods.
The bridge stands as a heritage monument showing how Leipzig engineers worked in the late 1800s. You can still see the careful craftsmanship in how the steel pieces were joined together.
The bridge is easily accessible for pedestrians and cyclists and links walking routes to nearby sites like Sachsenbrücke. The best time to cross is during daylight hours when the construction details are easiest to see.
The bridge is named after Léonçe Könneritz, and the structure unusually combines truss girders with arch elements in its design. This mix of two construction principles was an interesting solution for the challenges of crossing the river.
