Schloss Feldeck

Schloss Feldeck stands at 240 meters elevation, two kilometers south of Dorndorf, featuring remaining sections of its water-filled moat and stone foundations.

The castle originated in the late 13th century as a fortification for Hersfeld Abbey, serving as a protective sister castle to Krayenburg across the Werra river.

The von Buttlar family maintained ownership until 1945, after which the property functioned as a children's sanatorium during the East German period.

The castle, located at Teichstraße 2 in Krayenberggemeinde, currently operates as a private residence with select rooms available for guest accommodations.

Following the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle demonstrated an unusual response by surrendering without resistance, marking a distinct moment in regional military history.
