Öchsen

The Öchsenberg rises 627.2 meters above sea level, featuring basalt formations and forested slopes surrounded by the Oechse river and Sünna creek.

Between the Late Hallstatt period and the middle La Tène period, Celtic settlers constructed a 30-hectare fortified settlement with multiple basalt ring walls.

The mountain holds numerous archaeological remains from the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, including burial mounds that document early human settlements.

Several marked hiking trails cross the mountain, including the 5-kilometer Keltendorf Sünna loop and the 15-kilometer Keltenpfad trail from Vacha to Rhön.

Industrial basalt mining operations, which began in the 17th century and continued until 1986, substantially altered the original landscape of the mountain.
