Schloss Feldeck, Medieval water castle in Dietlas, Germany.
Schloss Feldeck is a former water castle near Dorndorf with surviving wall sections and a partially filled moat surrounding its foundation. The structure sits on elevated ground today and serves as a private residence, with some rooms occasionally offered for guest stays.
The castle was built in the late 13th century as a fortification for Hersfeld Abbey and was designed as a sister fortress to Krayenburg across the Werra river. By the end of the medieval period, the structure had lost its military importance.
The von Buttlar family maintained ownership until 1945, after which the property functioned as a children's sanatorium during the East German period.
The castle is located in a rural area and is most easily reached by private car, as it sits away from main roads. Visitors should arrange access in advance with the current residents of the property.
Following the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle demonstrated an unusual response by surrendering without resistance, marking a distinct moment in regional military history.
