Burg Wendelstein

Burg Wendelstein is a medieval castle in Vacha with a rectangular layout of approximately 60 by 80 meters and massive outer walls. The structure sits near the Werra River bank and functions today as a museum.

The fortress was built around 1260 as part of the city's defensive structures to protect access to the Werrabrücke bridge. It served as a stronghold in the northeastern section of Vacha during the Middle Ages.

The castle houses a collection of over 2,000 puppets gathered by Elenor Fischer, as well as exhibits about traditional local crafts like tanning and cloth-making. These objects show how artisanal work shaped people's lives here across generations.

The site is best explored on foot, with easy access from the town center. Plan enough time to view both the interior rooms and the surrounding structure at a comfortable pace.

One of the most interesting features is the former watchtower, now used as an observation point where visitors can gain views of the town and surrounding area. This vantage point offers a different perspective on the castle's role in defending the region.
