St.-Karl-Borromäus-Kirche, Modern Catholic church in Grunewald, Germany
St.-Karl-Borromäus-Kirche is a modern Catholic church in Grunewald with a square concrete structure, gabled roof, and narrow sacristy extension. The building features a functional design and houses an organ from 1898 positioned across two opposite galleries.
The foundation stone was laid on August 15, 1954, and the building was consecrated on May 19, 1955. Architect Alfons Leitl designed it as an expression of modern Catholic architecture in the postwar period.
The interior space blends the altar area directly with the congregation, following modern liturgical thinking. You can see a Russian icon and a relief depicting Karl Borromäus here.
The church is easily accessible and holds regular Catholic services throughout the week. It is advisable to check opening times in advance, as access may be limited outside of service hours.
The bells in the tower were cast in 1953 by Bochumer Verein and bear inscriptions addressing religious and community themes. These bells represent fine craftsmanship from an era when such work was done in major German bell foundries.
