Marktkirche

The Marktkirche in Neuwied is a Gothic Revival church featuring stone walls, a vaulted hall, a transept, and a western tower with corner turrets. Inside, a renovated organ and three cast steel bells from 1924 characterize the interior space.

The church was built between 1881 and 1884, replacing an older Reformed church that occupied the market square since 1684. The original slender tower fell victim to bombing in 1944 and received a flatter roof in 1946.

The church serves as a gathering place for musical performances and weekly services where organ and choir can be heard. Visitors notice how the building functions as a cultural center where local musical life unfolds.

The church sits centrally at the market square and is easily reached on foot. Note that the building is primarily open during services and concert events rather than throughout the day.

After bombing destroyed the original tower, the roof was replaced with a flat design, giving the building an asymmetrical profile that remains distinctive today. This postwar modification tells the story of the church's reconstruction and adaptation.
