Wallfahrtskirche, Pilgrimage church in Scheßlitz, Germany.
Wallfahrtskirche is a pilgrimage church set on a ridge of the Franconian Alps near Scheßlitz, with open views toward the Bamberg area. The building has stone walls, a vaulted ceiling, and a nave with galleries that carry a number of artistic details throughout the interior.
The church was built between 1610 and 1618, replacing an earlier fortified structure whose origins go back to the 13th century. In the 19th century, several furnishings from Bamberg Cathedral were brought here and installed inside.
The church still draws pilgrims today who climb the hill on foot and take part in religious processions through the year. Inside, sculptures and altarpieces reflect the deep devotion that people in this part of Franconia have long brought to this place.
The church interior is most reliably open during religious services and on Sundays throughout the year. The site sits on a hilltop and is reached on foot, and the path up already offers good views over the surrounding countryside.
The pulpit and the organ inside the church originally came from Bamberg Cathedral before being moved here in the 19th century. This means a small hilltop church in the Franconian countryside holds two objects from one of Germany's major Romanesque cathedrals.
