Thorr Castle

Welcome to Haus Thorr, one of the smaller country estates located on the Erft River. This beautiful manor house is situated in the district of Bergheim in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis region. The castle and its surrounding village derive their name from the Erft crossing of the ancient Roman road that runs straight from Cologne to Tongeren, known as Aduatuca Tungrorum, which is now called Via Belgica. Today, the modern Bundesstraße 55 bypasses the village due to the mining of brown coal in the middle of the Rheinische Braunkohlereviers region. It intersects with the Roman district road from Zülpich to Neuss, now known as Bundesstraße 477. Additionally, the road that follows the Erft River from Lechenich also joins here. Beyond the Erft River, the Erft Cycle Path runs today. The Bergheimer Acht cycle route passes four castles on its southern loop, and one of the sections of the Wasserburgen-Route is also marked here. The name Thorr suggests that it was derived from a Roman fortification tower, turris. The first mention of the village was as Ture in 997, followed by Thorr, a bridge over the Arnefe River in 1051, and a knight named Rudolf von Turre in 1140. The respective lords of the castle were enfeoffed by the Counts of Jülich. Gisilbrecht von Thurre served as Vogt in Bergheim in 1335. The castle was one of the 238 Jülichian knight's seats.
