Haus Watereck, Medieval castle in Vierlinden district, Duisburg, Germany
Haus Watereck is a medieval castle in Duisburg featuring defensive towers and a moat system fed by the Brusbach stream. The property was strategically positioned on Watereckstraße and relied on water features for protection.
The castle passed from the Lords of Hiesfeld to the Lords of Boeningen through a marriage alliance in medieval times. Over the centuries it changed hands several times before transitioning to civic ownership in 1755.
The site served as a residence for a noble family and held importance in the regional power structure of the Duchy of Cleves. Visitors can see from the remains how central such estates were to local authority.
The remaining foundations are visible on the grounds and show medieval German defensive building methods and water protection systems. Wear comfortable shoes as access to the structures may be uneven underfoot.
Senator Arnold Huyssen acquired the property in 1755, marking a shift from noble to civic ownership and stewardship. His purchase resulted in significant downsizing, leaving only about 60 Morgen of land attached to the estate.
