Schloss Thurnstein

Schloss Thurnstein is a three-wing castle with three stories, two towers, and a large courtyard located on a hill south of Postmünster. The building sections create a closed residential and administrative complex that developed over many centuries.

The castle began as a 13th century structure and changed owners several times over the following centuries. Its current form took shape at the end of the 17th century when the main buildings were reorganized.

The chapel in the east wing shows baroque religious architecture from its construction period. You can see how the spiritual role of this space shaped the castle's layout and daily life over centuries.

The castle sits on a hilltop, so walking involves some elevation change as you explore the grounds. Pathways through the landscaped gardens are accessible and easy to follow at your own pace.

During World War II, the castle served as an administrative center for German military and regional authorities. The buildings still show traces from this period, offering visitors a glimpse into how such structures were used during wartime.
