Hausberg, Hill with medieval castle ruins in Jena, Germany
Hausberg is a limestone hill on the eastern side of Jena, topped by medieval ruins and the Fuchsturm tower. The tower is the only standing structure left from a group of four castles that once occupied this elevated position above the Saale valley.
During the Middle Ages, four castles known as the Kirchberger Schlösser stood on this hill, with the oldest one, Burg Greifenberg, first mentioned in records from 1156. Over the following centuries all of them fell into ruin, leaving only the Fuchsturm standing.
The Fuchsturm is one of seven official landmarks of Jena and can be seen from many parts of the city. Visitors who climb to it stand on the remains of a medieval fortress and look down over the Saale valley toward the city center.
The hill is reached from Jena-Ost by several walking routes that vary in steepness, some connecting onward to nearby areas like Lobdeburg and Teufelslöcher. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as parts of the paths are rocky and can be uneven.
Behind the Fuchsturm, a geology trail runs past stone markers that were placed in 1936 to record the earth's history at this specific location. The trail starts from Jena-Ost and most visitors walk right past it without realizing what the stones are for.
