Fuchsturm, Stone tower on Hausberg hill in Jena, Germany.
The Fuchsturm is a stone tower about 30 meters tall, standing on Hausberg hill above Jena. A narrow spiral staircase leads up to an open observation platform at the top with views over the city and the surrounding valley.
The tower was built in the 12th century as part of a castle complex that once stood on Hausberg hill. Of the four medieval fortifications that occupied the hill, it is the only one still standing today.
The name Fuchsturm comes from the Latin Vulpecula Turris, meaning little fox. The tower is counted among the Seven Wonders of Jena, a group of local landmarks that residents hold in particular regard.
The tower can be reached on foot from the free parking area at Steinkreuz. The staircase inside is steep and narrow, so sturdy shoes are a good idea before heading up.
At the base of the tower stands a mountain restaurant that opened in 1868, making it the oldest dining house in Jena. Inside, there is a room known as the Knights Hall, a historic space that guests can see during their visit.
