Parkfriedhof Marzahn, Cemetery and memorial in Marzahn district, Germany
Parkfriedhof Marzahn is a cemetery in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district of Berlin, laid out with tree-lined avenues, memorial stones, and a funeral hall. The grounds are entered from Wiesenburger Weg and spread across a broad green area with clearly marked pathways.
The cemetery was founded in 1909, originally as a burial place for people with few means. Over the course of the 20th century it became a resting place for victims of both World Wars, which shaped much of what visitors see on the site today.
Stones and inscriptions across the grounds remember people from many countries who suffered through the 20th century. Walking along the tree-lined paths, visitors encounter markers that tell of very different lives and fates.
The cemetery is open from sunrise to sunset and is best explored on foot along its laid-out paths. It is easy to reach by public transport, and parking is available nearby for those arriving by car.
A Soviet memorial on the grounds does not only honor fallen soldiers but also holds their remains, making it an active burial site within the cemetery. This is one of several monuments on the site dedicated to soldiers of different nations.
