Hexenturm, Medieval tower in Idstein, Germany

The Hexenturm rises 42 meters high with thick walls of slate and quartzite, featuring a circular design and multiple interior levels at its hilltop location.

Built around 1170 as part of Idstein Castle's defenses, the tower served as a watchtower until 1779, with records indicating 21 different watchmen monitoring the area.

The tower gained its name 'Hexenturm' meaning Witch Tower through 19th-century literature, connecting it to the witch trials that occurred in Idstein during 1676.

Visitors can explore the tower's multiple sections, including the entrance level with wooden ceiling structures and a watchwalk positioned 19.2 meters above ground.

In 1945, Albert Kaus displayed a white flag from the tower window to surrender Idstein to American forces, defying direct orders during World War II.
