Ordensburg Liebstedt, Medieval fortress in Liebstedt, Germany
Ordensburg Liebstedt is a fortress in Liebstedt surrounded by a triple defensive wall system that creates an island-like setting. Entry to the main structure is across two drawbridges that protect the inner buildings.
The fortress originated in the 10th century along the Copper Road, an important medieval trade route. In 1331 the Teutonic Order took over the site and established a commandery.
The fortress displays brick Gothic features introduced during its 15th-century renovation that shaped regional building practices. These architectural details remain visible in the walls and structures, reflecting medieval craftsmanship traditions.
The site is located at Berggasse 95 and is typically open only for scheduled events. Visits are possible when celebrations, conferences, or special occasions take place there.
This is the only preserved example of a Durchgangsburg in Europe, a fortress type built directly across a medieval trade route. Its location on this route was not accidental but essential to its original purpose.
