Kolonie, Cultural heritage monument in Zeilsheim, Germany.
Kolonie is a residential settlement in Frankfurt-West with housing built between 1900 and 1925 for factory workers. The area spreads between Pfaffenwiese street in the north and Alt-Zeilsheim street in the south, divided into sections by internal roads.
Construction started around 1900 when the Hoechst chemical company needed housing for its factory workers. The settlement grew over several decades as a response to overcrowded urban apartments of that era.
The settlement shows how working families lived in the early 1900s, with their own small houses and gardens rather than crowded apartment buildings. This design gave residents more space and independence than typical urban housing of the time.
The settlement is easy to navigate on foot and feels manageable in size. The internal street layout allows visitors to explore the area comfortably without needing detailed directions.
Many original houses included small sheds where residents kept chickens or rabbits to supplement their food supply. This practice was common then and shows how self-sufficiency was woven into daily working-class life.
