Iburg, Medieval castle ruin in Bad Driburg, Germany.
Iburg is a medieval castle ruin on a hilltop near Bad Driburg with preserved stone remains, including the Bergfried tower and foundations of ancient fortification walls. The archaeological remains show the layout of what was once an important fortress with multiple building complexes.
The fortress was founded in the 8th century as a Saxon refuge and later expanded by the Bishops of Paderborn. It suffered final destruction in 1444 and remained a ruin afterward.
The ruins contain foundations of the Peterskirche, representing one of the oldest church sites in the Diocese of Paderborn. This sacred location still shows how important the place was for the early religious history of the region.
The site is free to access year-round and offers good hiking opportunities in the surrounding area. The ruins are located along the Eggeweg trail, which runs through the Egge Mountains and allows for many routes into the landscape.
The Kaiser-Karls-Turm was built in 1904 near the ruins and offers visitors panoramic views over Bad Driburg and the surrounding mountains. This observation tower connects the medieval history with a later addition from the 20th century.
