Stellmoorer Tunneltal

Stellmoorer Tunneltal is a nature reserve covering approximately 217 hectares of varied terrain in northern Hamburg. It combines wetlands, small streams, and low-growing oak forests within a valley carved by ancient meltwater.

The area became protected in 1978 as one of Hamburg's earliest conservation efforts. Archaeologists discovered evidence of Stone Age hunters in the region, indicating that people used this landscape thousands of years ago.

The name reflects the distinctive tunnel valley formation created by ancient meltwater. Visitors walk through landscapes shaped by these natural processes, experiencing how water once carved this terrain.

The area offers several walking paths suitable for different interests and abilities, open throughout daylight hours. Good signage makes it easy to explore, and wildlife observation works well in any season.

The tunnel valley formed during the last ice age through a striking process: underground water flushed out sediments and carved this distinctive depression. This geological feature is rare across Europe and offers insight into the region's climate history.
