Museumsdorf Volksdorf, Open-air museum in Volksdorf, Hamburg, Germany.
Museumsdorf Volksdorf is an open-air museum in the Volksdorf district of Hamburg, made up of seven timber-framed buildings dating from the 17th to the 19th century. The grounds bring together farmhouses, barns and outbuildings arranged as they would have been in a working rural settlement.
The land where the museum now stands was already settled in the Neolithic period, a fact confirmed by archaeological finds. The timber-framed buildings were later moved to this site from their original locations across the Hamburg region to keep them from being lost.
Walking through the grounds, visitors can see old tools, furniture and animal pens that show how daily life worked in the woodland villages around Hamburg. Each building has a different function, from living quarters to storage barns, giving a clear picture of how a small rural community was organized.
The grounds are spread out and explored on foot, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. Many of the buildings can only be entered as part of a guided tour, so it is worth checking tour times before arriving.
The museum keeps Schleswig cold-blooded horses, an old breed once raised across northern Germany for heavy farm labor, that still give carriage rides on the grounds. Seeing them at work gives a sense of how central draft animals were to everyday rural life in this part of the world.
