Museumsdorf Volksdorf, Open-air museum in Volksdorf, Hamburg, Germany.
Museumsdorf Volksdorf is an open-air museum with seven timber-framed houses that represent typical homes and farm buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries. The houses are spread across the grounds and show how these spaces were actually used.
The site was already settled in the Neolithic period, as shown by archaeological findings from 2010. The timber-framed houses were later built there to preserve the way of life of Hamburg's woodland communities.
The museum shows how people lived and worked in the woodland villages surrounding Hamburg. Visitors can see the same daily routines and work practices that shaped life in those communities.
Visitors should plan to walk along pathways throughout the open grounds and keep in mind that the houses are mainly accessible through group tours. It is best to allow several hours to explore the buildings and observe the animals at a comfortable pace.
The museum is home to Schleswig cold-blooded horses, an old local breed that still give carriage rides and assist with farm work. These horses were specifically bred for the harsh climate and heavy labor of the region.
