Castra Clarenna, Roman military fort in Donnstetten, Germany.
Castra Clarenna is a Roman military fort located on Hasenhäuslesberg near Römerstein, situated on steep terrain that rises sharply. The site includes the fortified camp itself as well as remains of a civilian settlement with various structures.
The fort was established around 85-90 AD as part of the border defense line of the Roman Empire and was abandoned around 150-160 AD. The associated civilian settlement, however, lasted significantly longer and was only abandoned in the 3rd century.
The settlement around the fort brought soldiers and civilians together in shared daily life and work. Traces of workshops and bathing facilities reveal how this place functioned as much more than a simple military outpost.
The terrain is relatively inaccessible and is best viewed from a nearby vantage point that overlooks the area. Visits require permission from Baden-Württemberg monument authorities since the site is protected by law.
This site was only discovered through aerial photography in 1975, despite earlier excavations in the surrounding area between 1891 and 1904. It demonstrates how easily such sites can remain hidden unless viewed from above.
