Inselzoo Altenburg

Inselzoo Altenburg is located on an island in the middle of a pond and houses around 540 animals from about 100 different species including monkeys, squirrels, exotic fish, and native wildlife. The facility uses the island setting to create a natural pathway where visitors walk past various enclosures.

The zoo began in the 1950s as a small local animal garden focused on raising and displaying domestic and regional animals. Over time it developed into a place where visitors learn about local animal species.

The annual Inselzoo Festival brings together local residents and visitors to celebrate the connection between the community and its animal inhabitants.

The grounds are easy to walk through, with the island layout creating a natural loop that requires no special navigation. Wear sturdy shoes since pathways can become muddy depending on the weather.

Visitors can experience the island from the water by renting pedal boats or rowboats and paddling around the enclosures. This perspective changes how the zoo feels and offers unusual views of the animals.
