Baldern Castle, Medieval castle and museum in Bopfingen, Germany
Baldern Castle is a hilltop castle and museum located northwest of Bopfingen, in the Ostalbkreis district of Baden-Württemberg. It consists of a baroque main building and a tower added in the 19th century, with several rooms open to visitors as part of the museum.
The site was first recorded in the 11th century, when it belonged to the noble family known as the Edelfreien von Baldern, and passed to the Counts of Oettingen in 1280. In the early 18th century the entire complex was rebuilt in the baroque style, giving it the form it has today.
Baldern has been in the hands of the same noble family, the House of Oettingen-Wallerstein, for centuries, and this long continuity gives the place a personal rather than purely institutional feel. The rooms on display hold portraits, furniture, and objects that reflect how German aristocratic households actually lived.
The castle sits above Bopfingen and is reached via Schlossparkstrasse, with a short but steep approach to the entrance. Parts of the site are accessible for visitors with reduced mobility, and it is worth checking opening times before you go as they can vary through the year.
The hilltop park surrounding the castle was laid out in the 19th century and opened to the public, which was unusual for a privately owned noble residence. On clear days the view from the hill takes in a wide sweep of the eastern Swabian Alb.
