REIMAHG, Underground military facility in Kahla, Germany
REIMAHG is an underground military complex in Kahla, consisting of tunnels carved into Walpersberg mountain that connect multiple production chambers. The facility was built to manufacture aircraft and other military equipment under the shelter of the mountain.
The complex was built in 1944 to manufacture advanced fighter aircraft, using and expanding tunnels that had previously been used for mining. The construction and operation required a large workforce of forced laborers brought in for this purpose.
A memorial in Leubengrund and the town museum in Kahla preserve the memory of the thousands who suffered during construction and operation. These spaces remain places where visitors can reflect on the human cost of what was built here.
Access to the remaining tunnel sections requires a guided tour with proper safety equipment and prior arrangement with local authorities. Visitors should plan ahead and check current conditions before making the trip.
An inclined railway system transported finished aircraft from underground chambers directly to a runway built on top of Walpersberg mountain. This allowed aircraft to be deployed for flight testing and operations without exposure to bombing.
