Jägerkaserne, Military barracks in Sonthofen, Germany
Jägerkaserne is a military complex in Sonthofen spanning about 13 hectares with multiple buildings arranged in a structured layout. The facility sits near the town center along Mühlenweg street.
The barracks were completed in 1936 and initially housed units of the Mountain Infantry Regiment 99 from the Wehrmacht's 1st Mountain Division. The site represents a significant chapter in the region's military past.
The complex includes a memorial from 1968 dedicated to the Smoke Generator Troops, serving as a reminder against war and dictatorship for visitors today.
The site is easily accessible from the town center and provides enough space to explore different areas at a comfortable pace. Visitors should allow adequate time to walk through the grounds and view the various historic buildings.
Between 1998 and 2006 the complex underwent extensive renovation with investments around 2.9 million euros, primarily focused on wastewater management improvements. This modernization work preserved the site's infrastructure for future uses.
