Schwarztonnensand, Nature reserve in Drochtersen, Germany
Schwarztonnensand is a nature reserve along the Lower Elbe near Drochtersen featuring an elongated inland island surrounded by river. The area consists of sand and gravel banks that continuously shift through natural water movement and depositional processes.
Until 1968, the location existed only as a mudflat visible at low tide. Dredging operations in the Elbe channel caused sand deposits that gradually shaped the current island.
The island functions as a research center where scientists study coastal habitats, environmental changes, and migration patterns of diverse bird populations.
Access to the area is restricted and requires special permission during certain periods. A bird warden regularly monitors the site to protect this sensitive environment.
The island hosts more than 300 plant species, including rare grasses that have adapted perfectly to the harsh environment. Such specializations make it a natural laboratory for studying how plants survive in extreme conditions.
