Castra of Rückingen, Roman fort in Erlensee, Germany.
Castra of Rückingen is an ancient Roman military fort in Erlensee with dimensions of around 180 meters by 140 meters. The remains show a rectangular camp layout with stone walls and typical strategic architecture embedded in the surrounding terrain.
The fort was built around 120 AD and served as a base for the Cohors III Dalmatarum pia fidelis. It was abandoned during the third century as Roman control in the region shifted.
The settlement north and west of the fort shows how Roman military posts and Germanic communities coexisted side by side. Visitors can still see this mixing of cultures today through the layouts and artifacts that record how people lived together daily.
The site is freely accessible with no entrance fees, making it an open destination for visitors. Information panels on the grounds explain the significance of the structures and help people understand the Roman layout and purpose.
The foundation walls of the Roman baths at the fort lie hidden beneath modern residential buildings, revealing advanced techniques from antiquity. These remains hidden under the modern city show how ancient infrastructure blends with the present-day landscape.
