Castra of Schloßau, Ancient Roman fort in Mudau, Germany
The Castra of Schloßau is an ancient Roman fort near Mudau with remains of barracks, storage buildings, and foundations sitting on a Buntsandstone plateau at 500 meters elevation. The site also preserves evidence of a civilian settlement and bathhouse complex that stood adjacent to the military installation.
The fort was built around 100 AD as part of the Odenwald limes system connecting the Main and Neckar rivers. Its abandonment around 250 AD marked the end of Roman control in this region.
The site reveals how Romans controlled their borders through fortifications positioned at key locations. The layout of the buildings shows the Roman approach to defense and governance in this distant region.
An educational path called the Limeslehrpfad connects this site to Hesselbach and provides information about the ancient Roman frontier system. The trail allows visitors to explore the Roman defensive works while learning about the region's Roman heritage.
Archaeological excavations revealed not only military buildings but also remains of a private settlement with houses and a complete bathhouse complex. This discovery shows that the fort was surrounded by a larger civilian community that benefited from military protection.
