Katzenstein, Mountain summit in Saxony, Germany
Katzenstein is a summit in the Ore Mountains with an elevation of 627 meters. The peak is accessible by several hiking trails and offers views across the surrounding landscape.
The summit received a Royal Saxon triangulation stone in the 15th century, which was rebuilt in 1864. The marker incorrectly displayed 1804 instead of the actual reconstruction date.
The mountain hosted a vital East German radio transmitter from 1955 to 1973, broadcasting television and radio signals throughout the German Democratic Republic.
Several marked hiking trails lead to the summit from various starting points around the area. The routes are manageable on foot and vary in length depending on where you begin.
A second mountain also named Katzenstein exists in the Ore Mountains near the German-Czech border. This name duplication is something locals and hikers in the region are aware of.
