Edelhof Alberoda, Medieval castle in Aue, Germany
Edelhof Alberoda is a medieval castle in Aue featuring a square residential building approximately 11 meters on each side, surrounded by water-filled moats. The Renaissance portals define the courtyard's appearance and reveal the layers of different building periods.
First documented in 1424, the castle initially belonged to the Oelsnitz family until 1536 when ownership changed. A major fire in 1617 damaged the structure significantly, leading to a later reconstruction in the Renaissance style.
The Renaissance portals display carved initials that recall the rebuilding after a fire. Visitors can notice these details while entering or exploring the courtyard, gaining a sense of the earlier inhabitants and their importance to the place.
The property operates today as a restaurant and guesthouse welcoming visitors on weekends and certain weekdays. It is worth checking ahead whether it is open, as operating times may vary depending on the season.
Between 1948 and 1958, this place served as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients from the region's hospitals. This unusual use shows how versatile the buildings were repurposed during the 20th century.
