Tiefer Stollen, Show mine and museum in Aalen, Germany.
Tiefer Stollen is a former iron ore mine in the Wasseralfingen district of Aalen, now open as a show mine and museum. The underground tunnels and chambers are largely intact, displaying the tools, machinery, and rock formations that were part of centuries of ore extraction.
Wasseralfingen was a centre of iron ore mining in the region for several centuries, and this mine was one of its main working sites. Mining operations ended in the 20th century, after which the site was gradually converted for public visits.
The name Tiefer Stollen means 'deep tunnel' in German, which describes the main passage that leads visitors far below the surface. Inside, original equipment and rock faces are still visible, giving a clear picture of how miners spent their working days.
Visits are usually done as part of a guided tour that takes you through the underground sections. Temperatures below ground stay cool all year, so bringing a warm layer and sturdy footwear is a good idea.
The tunnel was originally built not just for ore extraction but also to drain groundwater from the mines, giving it a dual technical role. This drainage function is still visible in the way the passages slope and connect underground.
