The building was designed in 1905 by Heinrich Seeling in the Neo-Baroque style with Art Nouveau elements and opened in 1910. After World War II damage, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1949 with a Wagner performance.
The house presents operas, plays, and concerts regularly, often alongside the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Its multiple stages serve different artistic purposes, from large opera productions to more experimental works.
