Wasserturm auf dem Werder, Neo-Gothic water tower in Neustadt, Germany
The Wasserturm auf dem Werder is a red brick structure built in Neo-Gothic style in Neustadt and stands about 47 meters high. Four corner towers with decorative elements define its appearance and give it a distinctive profile.
Built between 1871 and 1873, it was Bremen's first water storage facility to serve the growing population during industrialization. The construction marked an important step forward in the city's water infrastructure of that era.
Local residents nicknamed the tower 'Upside Down Dresser' because of its four tower-like extensions that jut out from the corners. This distinctive silhouette has become part of how people recognize and remember the Neustadt neighborhood.
The building is easy to view from the outside and sits in a central location in Neustadt where it can be reached without difficulty. Walking around the structure provides a good perspective on the architecture and the various sides of the tower.
The design draws inspiration from the architectural style of the Grand Master's Palace at Malbork Castle in East Prussia, bringing medieval influences into an industrial structure. This unexpected blend of historical style elements in a practical building surprises many visitors.
