Regionalpark Rhein-Main, Regional park in Hesse, Germany
The Regionalpark Rhein-Main is a large protected area with marked routes connecting regions around Frankfurt. It includes green corridors, nature reserves, and recreational areas spread across several districts.
The project came about in the 1990s from the desire to preserve open landscapes between growing cities. Since then, dozens of municipalities have cooperated to develop the green spaces as one connected system.
The park links urban and rural areas through trails that pass by working farms and converted industrial buildings. These places tell the region's story in a way visitors can discover while walking.
The park system has marked paths for hikers and cyclists of varying difficulty levels. The signage is clearly visible, and there are regular rest points and information stations along the routes.
Part of the park's development is funded through environmental compensation payments from Frankfurt Airport, creating an unusual link between air traffic and nature conservation. This connection shows how environmental mitigation can directly support local green spaces.
